Enhancing via proofreading

If you have landed here, it is because you are guarding a cherished creation and want to make sure it will be well-received by your target audience. You have come to the right place: proofreading is one of my favourite tasks! I love dissecting a manuscript down to the last syllable and exploring a piece down to the tiniest subtlety. Proofreading is not just about skimming through content and deciding that it is understandable enough to be published. No, think of proofreading as a big spring clean through which:

all typos, clumsy wording and errors are swept away;
every repetition, calque and inconsistency are hoovered up;
all ortho-typographical elements are polished;
the entire style is dusted off;
the ideas in the text are watered.

In short, by entrusting me with your writing you are committing to offering your readers a unique and local experience. My goal is to make certain that the central theme of your text is as crystal clear as the sea in the early morning, that your words truly take on their full meaning. Differentiate to better estimate

Proofreading other people’s writing is no easy task, as it entails understanding the original intention of the document, identifying the common thread of the text and ensuring it runs smoothly.

To do this, I take a different approach to your content depending on your needs, and the first thing to do is to separate proofreading from post-editing. If your text has been written in or translated into French by a flesh-and-blood human being, we will speak of proofreading. If it has been handled by machine translation, we will talk about post-editing.

And because each project is unique, I offer different levels of proofreading and post-editing, so as to match your vision as closely as possible:

Light proofreading / Post-editing

If you want your content to be consistent and error-free, it is essential to seek the help of a language professional.

Through a ‘simple’ revision, I will correct any grammar, syntax, spelling or typography mistakes in your text and verify that your document is correctly formatted and that the chapters, sections and titles are consistent.

If the text has been translated into English, I will not necessarily need the source text.

Heavy proofreading / Post-editing

If you wish for your work to truly move your audience, there is nothing better than a ‘heavy’ revision.

In addition to the corrections mentioned in the light proofreading, I will thoroughly refine your text, ensuring consistency in the terminology used, replacing any overly convoluted wording and cultivating your style.

If the text has been translated into French, I will need the source text in order to adapt and localise it effectively by comparing both versions.

How do we begin? Let’s dive right in!

First, you tell me about your needs via the contact form, describing the type and characteristics of your project, the length of the document, the target audience, the desired deadline, etc.

I will respond within 24 hours, suggesting a phone or video conference call so we can go over your needs together.

You will then receive a personalised quote. After considering the best way to meet your needs, I will provide you with a clear offer that meets your requirements and expectations.

Then, it is up to you: you can think it over and make a decision. If you have any further questions, you can contact me to clarify any doubts you may have.

If everything is clear and you are happy with the quote, simply return the signed quote to me by email and our collaboration can start!

Which languages do you work in? I proofread texts that have been (pre-)translated from English and Spanish into French which is my native language – as well as documents originally written in French.

What is your proofreading / post-editing process? First, I make sure I fully understand your vision so that it shines through in my corrections. Next, I do an initial review of the text to catch any ‘basic’ errors (spelling, grammar, typography, etc.). I then do a second, more thorough proofread, this time using a magnifying glass to spot unnecessarily wordy sentences, redundancies and any other unintentional irregularities. I proofread the entire document a third time (or even a fourth, just in case!) to check that no typos have slipped through, before delivering the final project to you. Please note that for this type of service – and especially depending on the length of the text – meetings are sometimes necessary to ensure we are on the same page. In any case, you will receive your file with all changes tracked. It is important that you review and accept any changes made. After all, this is a team effort!

What format will I receive the document in? We will clarify this point during our initial discussion but, generally speaking, I deliver the final document in the same format as the one I received.

What are your rates for proofreading / post-editing? Each project is unique and requires its own level of technical expertise and time. Contact me to discuss your project and receive a customised quote!

Will my documents remain confidential? Of course. We can also sign a non-disclosure agreement in this regard.
